A graphite pencil is the pencil we use for writing, drawing, and sketching. Made from a blend of graphite and clay. It produces a smooth, versatile line that can range from light to dark, depending on the grade.

Pencils are made from a mixture of graphite and clay. By changing the proportions of the mixture, we get different shades of black.

• More graphite = Darker lines.
• More clay = Lighter lines.

You might have noticed, graphite pencil has a H, B, F, HB letter on them.

• The H “Hard” pencils are harder and produce a lighter shade as they contain more clay than graphite.
• The B “Black” pencils are softer and produce darker shade as they contain more graphite and less clay.
• The HB “Hard black” is not too black but comes in the middle of the scale. It’s a regular pencil used in schools and offices.
• The F “Fine” pencils are harder than usual pencil and can stay sharp for longer periods. It produces a lighter shade than HB pencil.

The number on the graphite pencil indicates the range of shade or hardness and softness of that particular grade.

• The number is arranged in a way that represents softest to the hardest.
• 9B is the softest and the softness decreases as it travels to B.
• In H grade the Hardness increase from H to 9H
• The Softer the pencil it produces darker black mark with minimal pressure.
• The Harder the pencil it produces lighter mark but dull slowly.

H pencils:

• Stay Sharper longer, but can create grooves on paper with too much pressure.
• Smoother transition from one shade to an another
• Limited in shades.

B pencils:

• Provide a broader range of dark/light shade.
• The textures on the paper will be visible.
• More suitable for shading, smudging and blending.

• Applying too much pressure with hard pencil (H) can damage the paper’s surface creating grooves, making it harder to layer over with softer graphite.
• Use Lighter pencils (H grade) with light pressure, then build darker tones (B grade) to reduce graphite shine.

The best pencils for you depends on several factors:

Pressure:

• If you apply a lot of pressure naturally, “3B-4B” will be enough for the darkest you need.
• If you apply little pressure, you may need “6B-9B”.

Paper texture:

• Smoother paper works best with harder pencils and show less textures with softer pencils.
• Softer pencil will work better with textured paper, if you want textured look of the paper.

• Most of the shades can be achieved with these pencils 6B, 4B, 2B, HB, H, 2H.
• If you apply little pressure naturally then HB, 2B, 6B, 9B will cover most of your shades.
